Nov 8 2007'Valkyrie' Trailer Showcases Smug Cruise
Man, I knew Tom Cruise had gotten pretty smug after acquiring a fake wife slave and a perfectly genetically-engineered infant, but I figured we'd hit a smugness plateau. It turns out, as the trailer for Valkyrie shows, it wasn't even close.
But what could possibly make Tom Cruise act more arrogant than sucking the soul from a promising young actress, breathing it into a fine porcelain doll, and parading around the results like a real family? Little more than a Nazi uniform, an eyepatch, and a sharply-parted and gelled perm.
Thankfully, such self-importance actually works for the role, in which Cruise plays a Nazi convinced he can take down Hitler and his regime with the help of Kenneth Branagh, Terence Stamp, Bill Nighy, and others that make Cruise look like the spring chicken he recalls in his daily viewings of Top Gun. Bryan Singer might have a winner on his hands.

Uh... why don't any of the "Germans" have even MILDLY German accents in this? Tom Cruise just... talks like himself. And the others... have BRITISH accents?!

Are you trying to say Katie Holmes was promising at one point?
Cruise is a fantastic actor. I don't care if he's a scientologist, or a nutter, he's still a great actor.

The lack of accents ruins it for me. I cannot for ONE SECOND buy Tom Cruise as a German.

yeah, it's definitely not German enough. i mean, i realize just have fake German accents would be stupid, because they wouldn't have been speaking English, but this just seems kinda like Sophia Coppola's Marie Antoinette.

Yes! Another film not set in the U.S. where the lead, this time a German, has the only American accent.
Is that just lazy acting or does it come with the 'smug'?

Not buying Tom Cruise (or the other guys..) as Germans :s. I mean, I know they ARE...but the lack of even really fake sounding trace accents is disturbing...and what is with the way that one keeps saying "We must kill HItler." Does he figure it'll shock us harder if he keeps saying it :p? Oh dear, oh dear......@.@.......really the big thing is lack of accent though.....they just seem like some rich americans playing war games in their garage :p

Promising young actress? I hope you were talking anachronistically about Nicole Kidman because she WAS promising when she was young. Katie Holmes is/was/will be non-acting/non-pretty/non-talent. She sucks. Christopher Nolan knows this. The best thing she ever could have done for her career was marry Tom Cruise and she even messed that up by becoming the creepiest person on Earth.
