Oct 18 2007'Stop-Loss' Trailer Causes Personal Re-Evaluation

stop-loss-trailer.jpg

Without getting too political, it's sad that the most fitting representation of the current war in Iraq isn't a tale of heroism in a daring mission, or sacrifice for a final victory, but of a soldier desperately not wanting to keep fighting.

That's one of the many things that made me feel terrible while watching this trailer for Stop-Loss, which stars Ryan Phillippe as a young man refusing orders to return to Iraq. It was also a depressing realization that I don't think I could ever fully empathize with these characters because I hated the versions of them I encountered in high school. Among the many losses we've faced in this war, perhaps none is so confusing as the transformation of your high school bully into a revered national hero. At least to me, a self-centered bastard.

Trailer under the cut.

AMEN.

Maybe you could just accept that, like everyone else, soldiers are individuals? Of course some enlisted soldiers are jerks who were bullies in high school, but as an Army officer I can tell you that most of them are very fine, decent people. Also, joining the Army is a real growing-up experience for a lot of people, and some soldiers who were obnoxious in high school do mature into wonderful people as adults.

Only Hollywood would make a hero of a deserter. Or is he a coward afraid to go back to war? Either way, an appropriate film would show him being drawn and quartered.

Nope, not too political, only completely ignorant and mostly retarded. Congratulations on writing this biggest piece of crap I have read in a full month, that takes talent with some of the junk I have to read.

Gee, LenS, maybe he just doesn't want to die for something he doesn't believe in. It makes me sick to think that there are people like you in the world. You're the reason dictators exist. If you'd been born in Germany during WW2, I have no doubt you'd have been a great Nazi zealot.

I support our troops - I support saving them from dying in a pointless war that should never have been started and certainly never have lasted this long.

My dad was in vietnam and is still a wreck to this day. I have friends that have been sent back to the war when they thought they were done. They were a mess coming back the first time. This movie isn't about traitors or cowards. This movie is about common sense. What if this guy was your kid or father? My dad wouldn't be the shell of a man he is today if the military didn't make him fight a pointless war longer than he should have and had to see and do the things he did just to survive.

Brilliant insight. On the one hand, serving in the military is part of a fine tradition that symbolizes honor, intergrity, and self sacrifice. But really, those days are long gone, and our boys are fighting an imperialistic war founded on half truths and outright lies. Why would anyone willingly choose to participate in that ? No one wants to see american soliders hurt, but that doesn't mean they are beyond critique for their choices and actions.

But you know what ? Relying on self rightousness seems to be the only thing people who support the war have these days, so it's no surprise. Keep burying your heads in the sand and yelling traitor at anyone who dares to question what you say. No really, it's the hallmark of critical thinking. Doesn't everyone pull out the Nazi card when they're at the losing end of an arguement ?

Yep.

LenS is right, this is a pathetic excuse for Hollywood to make a buck. I don't care if you are for or against the war but the last time I checked the military is all volunteer and considering I have been in for fourteen years of it (not all fun) I should know a thing or two about it. This movie is about a guy who like the rest of us had a moment and signed up, went over there (been there done that) and decided screw this and wants to get out. What the average American doesn't realize and why this will appeal to the general masses of heads up the ass general public is that when you sign up there is this thing called inactive reserve time that allows the military to call you back up and come let you play with us again. Also, when a unit is getting ready to go playa gain that they look at how many of their Soldiers they have planning on getting out and counsel said individuals. They also try and work something out so that not everyone is "stop losses". Does it still happen? Yes but it is the nature of the beast and like I mentioned earlier, no one made the Soldier enlist he did it himself. And for all those who say that this is bullshit, Shut the f*ck up and thank a Vet that you can whine like teh bitch you are.

I just want to debate, not draw lines. That's what this country is founded on right? My dad inlisted while others (like those calling the shots on the war now) hid in military jobs that kept them nice and safe. There are those who are war hero's who say this war is mismanaged and pointless. My cousin fought there, was injured there, and was still made to fight. Now he has pshychological scars to go with the physical ones. He told me the thing that he will never forget is having to "open-up" on a crowd with children. I thank him and my dad and my grandfather who fought under Patton in North Africa. Those who tell people to stop whining and shut up remind me of another part of history, they were called the hitler youth. I once heard that a country cannot be destroyed from without until it is destroyed from within. If people can't understand that, join the military rather than post blogs calling people names from the comfort of a blog. I don't stand for anything that what we are doing to ourselves and what it will cost down the road.

I apologize and pulled out the "Nazi" card without real thought. What I really meant was those who wore the black shirts under Mussolini. Also, my last comment. I am not saying I don't support what we are fighting, I just wonder the damage we will cause to ourselves by this war and is it really worth it? Those who serve do a great service to this country and if I could contribute to the fight physically I would. If we do face danger on our soil and I face having to fight for my freedom and my country, I will. What I can't stand is the ideology and how it's making devisions within the people of this country. It isn't all black and white in this war, it's grey. I just think that the leadership of this country is creating these devisions in the people and hollywood is a tool that is being used in this. We do need to protect our sovrenty, I just don't think we are doing a good job at it with this war.

Hey JP! I know how you feel and I agree with somethings you said! And i do respect your opinions. Saying that, because I signed up in the US Marines in 2000. I was active from 2000-2004. I was heavily involved in combat, in beginning of the Iraq War 2003. My unit was in a routine 6month delployment in japan....In Dec 2002, we come home..and guess what Feb 2003 we are on a plane for Kuwait. I was in artillery, and our unit went from Kuwait all the way up to Tikirt, (over 500miles) 100 miles N. of Baghdad...We were fortunate we spent only 4months over there. At that time back in June 2003, there wasnt a need for a vast majority of combat elements over there i.e. (Tanks, Artillery, LAV'S).

I have been inactive ready reserve (IRR) since 2004. I have 6months left on my contract..and I have to go to some retarded manatory regional muster in a few weeks. They are bascially going to over some admin. stuff and you know they are going to want me to re-enlist. And the answer of course will be no. I was a CPL when i chose to leave duty active duty. I and my friends and fellow veterans that been over there once, once is enough for me, just like them. Especially the ones like myself, have seen combat...And wish it upon no one...But hey, I volunteered to serve my country, so that was a fate that could happen for me, which it eventually did.

This movie I will go see.. And yes Hollywood does mess up military movies for the most part. The movies they got right, in my opinion, were Platoon, We were Soldiers, and Black Hawk Down, and Born on Fourth of July.
Now a story about a soldier who is a SNCO, who just got back from combat, and being sent over again right away...Is bulls***!
Now this is where i will rant and praise....This guy who is SNCO, who voluntered for the military, did his time, and served honorably...now against his wishes, has to go back over again...I know how he feels...I know the PTS, the anger, the emotional battle this character is going through. Now since the right thing to do, is go back over there again..B/c there is a not-so clear-line in the contract that says they can do that... But if this guy chooses to go AWOL, well you know what, that is his choice...And for some people to say he is coward?.. FU! He went over there once, and i do think its b/s, that the GOVT keeps sending combat vets over there between 2-5 times...What that does to you, and your family, and friends you will never know, unless you been there or your family has too... (Like me and all other combat vets and family members)

Would I have gone AWOL in his position? No, i wouldnt! Everyone is different...But i wouldnt write someone off as a coward...For being through something like that once, and surviving it (Like myself) and being forced back into that again..after wanting to leave active duty once your 4-6year commitment is up, eventhough you do have 8yrs is bullshit....And yeah I dont think its the really right thing to do. but hey its his choice.... Do what you gotta do man, because they have enough people in the military who skate thru the cracks who never been there (Combat Environment)..that are just as elible..They aren't special!
This guy wants to leave..., let him.....i hope he doesnt get caught..Is he a coward?...No!!!...He went over there once, and did his time and voluntered!...

I have alot of buddies that i went to Iraq with back in Feb-June 2003, that were part of that 1800 Marine re-call list..I have some leaving in 2 weeks to go back over there again...And these guys have been in out of active duty for almost 3 years. And again, the all mighty wisdom of our GOVT (LOL) are sending them back over there again against their will..after they did their time on 4years of active duty... And my friends didnt run, they are honoring their contract, would I have looked less upon them if they did? Nope..They are my band of brothers...and they watched my back and I watched theirs in combat! I will be there for them...no matter what..They are my family!

Being an Iraq vet myself, some of the worse things about these deployments (other than loss of life) is the mind numbing drudgery and Headquarts BS, soul eating anger and memories that you drag through everyday there after. I often think, I can not support a war that I would not fight myself or send my own kid to fight. For Iraq it does not add up, for Afghanistan I beleive it still does add up. my 2 cents, if I could afford it in this economy. I hope I have not offended anyone here.
