Oct 30 2007'Spaced' To Be Dumbed Down for Americans

Admittedly, I was pretty surprised and relieved when NBC remade the outstanding UK The Office and it came out as something genuinely watchable, and even enjoyable. But rather than treat this as anomaly it is, Fox is going to take a role of the dice and try not to ruin Spaced, the classic sitcom from Shaun of the Dead's Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright.

The show was picked up by US producers Wonderland Sound and Vision after the company’s president, Peter Johnson, was told about the show by someone in a comic-book store.

As a fan of Pegg’s Shaun of the Dead film, he decided he wanted the rights – and now Fox has ordered a pilot episode.

And if for some reason you're holding out hope, bear in mind that someone from Will & Grace is adapting it. So at best they'll find a way to work in a squeaky voice, flaccid sexual tension, Harry Connick Jr., and some evidence of how flamboyant gay people are.

This news makes my insides hurt.

This is the third time I've read this, and I still find it unbelievable. I just don't get why.

One positive I can see coming out of this is maybe we'll finally get Spaced on DVD over here in America, and this adaptation will be quickly cancelled before it can ruin the good name of Spaced.

Region free DVD player, Reeven!

Are you kidding me?
Fuck, they're gonna ruin it. They are going to totally ruin it...
jesus christ....

oh god. I threw up a little bit. Such an amazing show and it's going to be destroyed. I wish they'd use the money to make another season of UK spaced, big train or Black books instead.

This has absolutely nothing to do with the post, but whysoserious.com has gotten pretty interesting.

oh nonononononononono please tell me this is a lie.

i will kick a man if Fox touches my SPACED.

another messed up one!!

Fuck.

Not only are the gonna ruin it, it'll be completely unrecognizable.

The worst part for me is that this TV executive was supposedly a fan of Shaun Of The Dead and yet had never heard of Spaced. How does that work? Surely if you're a fan of something you seek out more things by the same people? Either way, he's a TV EXECUTIVE. Isn't it his job to know about that stuff? Why did he have to hear it from some guy in a comic book store?

Speaking of which, imagine being that guy..

"Yeah dude, they did this great show called Spaced before the film, it's much better".

"Is that so... hmm, perhaps I can remake it for the American market..."

"..."

this is so depressing -_-

of all the posts i've read - i've never felt more compelled to scream NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO upon hearing this news. goddamn.

Nope, I refuse to believe it. There is only one! Or at least there will be once I have money for a region free DVD player. This new show does not exist in my universe. You simply cannot remake Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, and Edgar Wright.

wtf????? u joking? they will ruin one of the best sitcoms in the world! Wot a bloody joke

What's the problem? When they make a hash of it we can just point and laugh, safe in the knowledge that this [the UK version] is the good sh*t.
