Sep 20 2007'Southland Tales' Trailer Confuses Me

I'm a self-confessed idiot who needed parts of Shrek explained to him (that donkey is basically racist, right?), so it comes as no surprise that the trailer to Donnie Darko director Richard Kelly's latest, Southland Tales, makes nearly no sense to me. I've watched it four times now and the only thing I can say with any certainty is that The Rock does a lot of terrible fidgety/scared moments and that I should own a Pixies album. It seems like one of those movies where it will end up being a post-modern thing inside a thing inside a thing, but I have no idea what any of those things are.

Wow! What a piece of shit!! I'm confused, is it a have-beens movie or SNL, or both!! It's a have-beens/SNL film! Richard Kelly accomplished all he would accomplish by 30.... I wonder what film he's ripping off now....Donnie Darko=Last Temptation of Christ.

Thank God for Christopher Nolan and Darren Arronofsky

i didn't get it either...donnie darko was overrated and you all know it. the only reason people say they like it is because they haven't seen enough good movies to compare it to or because they want all the kids at Hot Topic to think they're cool.

Anyone know what the final running length will be? What's with all the SNL characters? I KNOW: Maybe this one is Kelly's "Amazon women on the moon"!

well I'm disappointed. I like Richard Kelly, Donnie Darko was good, but it was better when you listen to the commentary and hear about all the ridiculous connections Kelly thought up while writing it. I wish I could say I was excited about this too, but 'the rock' is in it, sarah michelle gellar, and of all the assholes in the world, Justin Timberlake? epic failure.

So, because someone uses references only he understands until they're actually explained makes something a good movie? Sorry, don't buy it. Donnie Darko was pretentious shit, anyone who claims its a deep story is under 17, and defendants who are quick to shout "you just don't understand it" seriously need an entry and exit wound.

True to form, this looks fucking awful. Why anyone would offer Cheri Oteri a role post-1997 is beyond me. Why anyone would even consider Will Sasso for for a part other than "Background Fat Guy #2" is ridiculous. And Kevin Smith? Done.

At least it's something original.

Agree with that - Donnie Darko was overrated and pretentious - no more understanding needed than that. It wasn't "over my head", I just didn't like it.

This looks to be more of the same - random shit pretending to be something deep and important. Interesting cast, I'll give it that though - I don't think I imagined a few of those people being thrown in there but ... *shrugs*.

Kelly was quoted as saying:

"I did a grad film but that ended up hurting me more than it helped. My grad film was this over the top, gonzo, completely absurd sci-fi thing with non- professional actors. When you have actors in their fifties who are still doing student films, you're not going to get top-of-the-line. So when people looked at the short, they went, 'Well, is this how the acting is going to be in Donnie Darko (2001)? We don't think you can direct actors if that's anything to go by.' I was like, 'Give me a good actor, and I can direct.'"

Really Richard??

Sarah Michelle Gellar is still making movies........ D=

This guy has, and obviously still does think of himself as the next Terry Gilliam. How much did that trailer remind you of Brazil? Genius through obscurity is something directors without any talent try from time to time to bring themselves out of the gutter (Vanilla Sky anyone?). Thinking that the more confusing and twisted it is, that no one will admit to not understanding it and grant him "brilliant" status.

Is this movie also based entirely on a gay pop song from the 80's like the last one? Donnie Darko was such a waste of time to watch. I kept waiting for an actor to walk on or something to happen or a clue as to how this movie got made at all. Proof it is all who you know or blow.

#11: Agreed

And as to "donnie darko", that movie was just terrible. Alot of people who champion it, when I tell them it sucks, will either try to 'explain it' to me, or say that it's over my head. None are true. I understood it, it's just that I watched the whole fucking thing, thinking that it was going to explain how any time travel happened period. And it didn't. It was stupid.

Oops, although I agree with 11, I meant to start with...

#10: Agreed

i wasnt a fan of darko at all, it seemed like it was overly complicated for the sake of being overly complicated.

and after first seeing this trailer i was onboard for this until the very moment i saw timberlakes face on screen, and i agree that i got absolutely nothing of the story from the trailer.

buuut, then i found out that this movie is parts 4,5 and 6 of a six part story, and 1,2 and 3 were a graphic novel. i read the novel and im actually convinced that this has to potential to be incredibly awesome.

thats assuming that the conclusion is as good as the set up.

if anyone wants a break down of what this is all about let me know.

i'd like a breakdown

Wow, I am so impressed that there are still people out there with a brain that can actually tell the difference betwen art and a piece of crap. I admit that I liked Darko and still do, but you have to go beyond the psuedo-kafka world and just take it for what it is. A caprice, with an excellent haunting diegetic soundtrack, with nice cinematography, good acting and some decent laughs. As far as time-travel and anything of substance all you need to look at is the fact that, that utter moron Kevin Smith does the commentary on the DVD. Thats all I needed to know to know that there isnt any substance anywhere in anything in anypart of Richrad Kelly's films. Note to Kevin: Take off the hi-tops and trenchcoat, its not clever, you're not clever and its time for you to go away.. FAR AWAY. As far as this new thing. Im kind of speachless so I will step aside and let the former posters speak for me which is much better than I could have done.

Thank you all for giving me a few more extra days of peace while I continue to lose faith in humanity one person at a time.

Ghostdog

Dwayne Johnson and J.Timberlake are surprisingly talented actors; but i'm still trying to figure out what Southland Tales was about... maybe it's really obvious, i.e. life in Los Angeles is blurred, cluttered, flashy and not always meaningful.
