Aug 14 2007Sam Raimi Directing, Peter Jackson Producing The Hobbit

Following up on the earlier rumor that Sam Raimi might be taking over to helm The Hobbit, IESB is reporting Peter Jackson is finally settling disputes with New Line and has stepped on board to produce, putting Raimi in the director's seat. I will be starting the line for tickets tomorrow morning.
If you ask me, this is a pretty solid second choice that New Line's scoring. I've always been a firm believer in the idea that if you can't get your dream girl, might as well get her slightly uglier best friend, right? Or if not her, maybe some old, fat, drunk whore at a local bar. Then turn to the old, fat, drunk man who's dressed like a woman. If not him, how about pantyhose sewn into the shape of a human and stuffed with old socks?

Look for cameos from brother Ted and friend Bruce Campbell. They have been in everything he's done since Xena. Maybe Ted will be the new, younger, Gollum and Bruce will be, of course, Gandalf.

Hey maybe there can be a sequence where a dark hobbit does a musical number with emo clothes and eye liner ...

The source does NOT say that Peter Jackson "is finally settling disputes" with New Line. It says that New Line "has quietly been TRYING to mend fences with [Jackson]". It doesn't say that the two sides have reached any agreements. Nor does the story say that Raimi is directing. It says that he is "LEANING TOWARDS" directing. Given how things change during pre-production (the source says that "negotiations are still underway and that "final deals won’t be reached immediately"), none of this is official, as the title and text of this entry imply.

i don't buy this at all, although it may be true because people lie all the time. I was at comic con and sam raimi was promoting 30 days of night. He was asked specifically if he was doing anything with the hobbit, and he said straight out that it would be peter jackson or new line's project and that he has nothing to do with it, absolutely nothing.

@#4: the source definitely looks a bit less optimistic than this post would have us believe. Good catch.
Peter Jackson is an idiot if he gets back into bed with Bob Shaye. He is well known to be one of, if not the biggest thief in Hollywood. Trying to get money owed to you by New Line is like squeezing blood from a stone. (that's not exclusive to famous people, they are quite comfortable screwing support staff and freelance staff just as much)
