Aug 23 2007Martin Scorsese's Shine a Light Trailer

Like everyone, I love Martin Scorsese, but this trailer for his Rolling Stone's concert documentary Shine a Light is doing nothing for me. The film covers two nights at the Beacon last last year, with cameos from Christina Aguilera, Jack White, Bill Clinton, and frequent appearances by Scorsese himself. With the release pushed to next April, here are some changes I suggest would make this better:

1. If it was 1970.
2. If the aged man resembling Mick Jagger weren't getting so disgustingly sexual while singing with Christina Aguilera. Is he trying to make David Bowie jealous?
3. Less of Marty and Mick pretending there was dramatic, behind-the-scenes conflict.
4. More of Keith Richards snorting things.
5. Robin Williams voicing Mick Jagger.

I would have really preferred something more like another No Direction Home than this. You?

First Biznatches.

Mick Jagger.....the most overrated thing since the "Mona Lisa" painting.

And officially the Ugliest Man in the World.

scorcese's best musical endeavor was obviously the last waltz. can't top that.

will Joe Pesci be in it?

I love the stones but they never made any great albums past Some Girls. I have to agree this film should have been made in the 70's when they were still badass. This film is 30 years + too late.

I totally agree. When I first heard about this documentary I thought it was going to be about the history of the rolling stones, who cares about what they are doing now.

I can tell you from experience on the road, the amount of drama going on between anybody important is minimal. The great thing about live music, is that there is no re-take, just mistakes. I can see this documentary being a little boring, and will probably shed light on how old and crystalized the Rolling Stones have become. Bob Dylan's documentary only made me see clearer that he makes no sense and is boring. They should have more band skanks, more drugs, more Mick Jagger bank account statements.

I'd be interested in seeing this. Yes, I know all the cliches about why the Stones are supposedly no longer relevant: Oh they're so OLD; they haven't made anything good since "Some Girls," blah blah blah.... People seem to say all that just out of habit. All I know is I've seen them twice in the past several years and they still kick ass on stage.

as someone who has had access to the entire documentary, i can tell you that you all happen to be incredibly wrong. im not a diehard stones fan, and am pretty unbiased when it comes to this particular project (not a ton of emotional investment in it, to put it that way) but it is GORGEOUSLY photographed, and fascinating, but even if you aren't interested in the behind the scenes stuff (for the record, the conflicts were real), musically and visually its quite good and a very different type of rolling stones show. its intimate and bluesier and the cameos are quite special. the different pace of the show may have had something to do with the passing of micks father just before the concert. (it was postponed because of this and shot about three days after the funeral).

anyway, i hope you will give it a chance. its really quite good.
