Aug 22 2007Logan's Run Director is Nobody

Commercial director Joseph Kosinksi will make his feature debut with Logan's Run, an adaptation of the 1967 sci-fi thriller. It is said the film will go more low-tech with the technology and stay closer to the book than the 1976 adaptation, which tells the story of a future society that demands voluntary death at a certain age, just as cancer does in our society.

SlashFilm was kind enough to put together a sample of his work for viewing, and it's pretty typical artsy commercial bullshit that probably wins ad awards. And what world does this guy live in that every commercial is over a minute long?

In the above clip, a woman living in an ice world impatiently waits for her sentient car husband to return home. Her robot dog recognizes the distinctive sound of approaching downtempo electronica that signals its car-master's approach. In the end, we discover that we can purchase this sentient car from Saab dealerships.

More clips with explanations below the cut.

Two spandex-wearing lesbians slumber in their mansion. One is awoken by the entrance of red vinyl shoes and the increasingly obnoxious sourceless house music. Upon investigating outside, she is transformed into pure energy. She returns hours later, at which point her partner has already changed from her sleeping spandex to her early morning satin pajamas. This is apparently common behavior in future lesbians.

Two young boys lie outside, pondering the stars above them. They quickly realize their night would be much better spent inside, playing Halo.

A post-apocalyptic mercenary hunts for the singer responsible for doing a terrible cover of his favorite band, Tears for Fears.

Some attractive young couples jump in slow motion while red leaves float elegantly around them. It's clear from their enjoyment that they're probably on shrooms.

a SAAB prototype that will cost you 1 billllliiiion dollars!

That car is the shit.

didn't david lynch and so many directors start as a ad director?

you wang

I thought Logan's Run was already re made and they called it The Island.

No, Logan's run was remade into an episode of "dinosaurs". The episode was, I believe, called "Hurling Day"

It was actually an episode of Sponge Bob called "What Really Happened to Squidward?"

#3 David Lynch most certianly did NOT start as a commercial director. His debut feature was his AFI thesis project Eraserhead and he then went on to make Elephant Man. (he did have some short, art installation type of pieces prior to Eraserhead)

Michael Bay was a commercial director though. That sort of 'quality' is more the norm for a commercial director turned real director. Soulless, bland, over the top tripe. With very few, albeit notable, exceptions.

Don't you mean 1976?

Aw crap! I wasn't paying attention. Forgive my stupid-ness and stuff. But then again, your mind would be mush too if you worked where I work.

David Fincher, Ridley and Tony Scott all started as Commercial Directors, Fincher and Tony Scott still are. All are good directors.
I never liked the stuff of this Kosinski guy though. It really is could and soulless, even among Motion Graphics people.

to #4-

did you even see logan's run? i did, and i dont remember clones. or being the worst movie ever made.

the islands plot is a dead ringer for a movie called the clonus horror. which all cool people more than likely saw while watching mst3k at some point in their lives. i remember seeing ads for the island and immediately thinking of that movie. the only similarity to logans run is possibly... the running? and the jumpsuits?

did you know blade runner was remade yeah, its called the fifth element. didnt you see the flying cars?

crap

i meant fincher!!!

i always mix those two up...

ridly and tony scott also started as a commercial director

It's R.E.M., not Tears For Fears.

Holy mackerel, I've been screwing that up for nearly two decades! Apologies to the original writer - he's right (it's Tears For Fears), I'm wrong (not R.E.M.). *duh!*

The last three aren't bad compared to the first two. In fact they get better the further he gets from electronica as his soundtrack.

Here's hoping they've banned Aphex Twin in the domed city of the near future.

What is really strange is that this director is poaching most of his reel from the collective work of his former company:
