Aug 15 2007Dan in Real Life Trailer

I figured Steve Carell would eventually find his way onto the tame, boring romantic comedy scene, but I had hoped we'd get at least one more 40-Year-Old Virgin out of him before that time arrived. Now it seems it may be too late, as I fear Dan in Real Life is the giant meteor signaling the end of the Carell we know and love and the beginning of this banal wiener seen here. He's so likable in this trailer that it would make John Cusack sick.

On the plus side, kudos to them for casting Dane Cook as the douche brother, a role that fits him as well as one of his idiotic leather wristbands.

on behalf of the female readers of I Watch Stuff, i'm going to have to say this looks good.

and anyway, if steve carell really stuck to 40-year-old virgin style movies, he'd end up with a career mimicking pauly shore's.

What a shame. Dane Cook. The cliche song. I'd rather be boiled in oil than go see this movie.

What a horrible way to follow up Evan Alimghty.

But, I guess we all have to pay the rent.

I think this explains it all...

Hollywood By-laws and guidelines Chapter 6 - Section D - paragraph 3
"...and in all romantic comedy featured films and theatrical trailers, the use of one of the follow songs is required: (a) "What a Wonderful World" by Louie Armstrong, (b) "Let My Love Open the Door" by Pete Townshend, (c) "No More Mister Niceguy" by Alice Cooper or (d) "At Last" by Etta James."

I find choice C to be an odd one, but there it is, in black and white on the internet. It must be true.

Hey now!

Your giving the ladies a bad name!!!!! I think this movie looks like every other chick flick, and Dane Cook is a frickin' tool!

Steve Carrell knows better.

Steve Carell is one endearing SOB, ann I think this flick (despite peoples intense dislike for Dan Cook) will be really good. Carell hasn't been given the chance to "explore the space" yet in any film, so I'm going to sit back and let him do his thing. The man has chops, just wait...

On behalf of the female readers who have an inkling of taste, I'm going to say that this movie looks terrible.

As much as I love Carell, he really needs to learn to be more picky with his movie scripts and avoid embarassing dreck like this.

And actually, Carell has "explored his space" - his role in Little Miss Sunshine was outstanding. He surprised critics everywhere for his understated role, and he played it beautifully, balancing the drama and dark-comedy perfectly.

It looks heart warming.

I hate heart warming.

another female reader saying this looks baaaad.

I like Steve Carrell and Juliette Binoche so much, though, and I think they will have good screen chemistry. The family treacle is bad enough, but to believe that Juliette Binoche would seriously date a guy like Dane Cook is preposterous.

No need for the theater with this one. I think I can wait until the bargain bin DVD.

another female reader who thinks it looks cute, and will go see it...
why must everyone be soooooo stuck up about movies? i'm in the industry and love art house movies, independant films, but will totally admit to sometimes wanting to turn my brain off and just enjoy a silly, happy movie once in a while. it's not a crime, it doesn't make me a bad person, it doesn't mean all my tastes are horrific, just that i am open-minded enough to enjoy lots of genres and appreciate life and living in all it's varied forms...

well said, #11. mine is another vote for cute and worth the watch. what's so bad about the likeable "everyman"? Carell is talented and i think he'd do well in that role and in any other he tries.

I agree with 11 & 12. It was nice to see Carell explore a darker character in Little Miss Sunshine, but I love the looks of this character and its "heart", even if its unrealistic, or not artsy enough, or if others in the film fall short. Carell will deliver, so as a fan, I'm all over this. And when is the new Office coming out?

Also- Dane Cook, upon 2nd look at that trailer, could surprise people.
