Jul 3 2007Eastern Promises Trailer

David Cronenberg re-teams with his History of Violence star Viggo Mortensen and adds Naomi Watts in his latest effort, Eastern Promises. When Watts finds a diary that gets her involved with a notorious crime family, she gets in the most dangerous adventure with a journal since Indiana Jones hid his father's Grail diary from the Nazis. Or when Anne Frank hid her standard diary from the Nazis, for that matter. My point is that mobsters and Nazis hate written daily recollections of events.

saw an advance screening, pretty weak IMO

but, if you liked "A History of Violence," you'll probably like this one too

I wish Cronenberg would go back to his Videodrome/Naked Lunch style movies. Those were his best.

But I'll take whatever Cronenberg I can get.

"History of Violence" was one of those movies (like "Cold Mountain") that seemed ok - nothing special really - but the umpteen hours of DVD extras show how much care and fine detail went into the picture (Viggo and Ed Harris having off screen dialogue in character etc) make you wonder why it wasn't better. In "History"'s case I think it was just the temperature of the water. In "Mountain"s case it must have been editing. Man those folks sure thought they were making the next "Gone with the Wind".

Happy Independence Day ye scum, Vince and Judge Apatow!

I gotta see it!

Thanks, Proteon. And thanks to all for reading. (sorry, I get sentimental when I'm wasted). But for the record, I really liked History of Violence, but I think mainly becuase I was never sure what Cronenberg was going for. It played out like an afternoon special, except for the sex and the violence, which were graphic to the point of hyperrealism. Not sure what the hell he was going for, but I was fascinated throughout the flick. I'll be checking his next project out for sure.

Vince, based on your reply, you're gonna like it.

I didn't loathe History - I just didn't adore it. But the dvd extras are extensive and worth the watch.
