May 23 2007The Golden Compass Trailer

Even if you don't care about extravagant fantasy epics, you'd better just go ahead and watch the trailer for The Golden Compass, the first chapter of the His Dark Materials series. It's bound to be the next Harry Potter/Lord of the Rings thing that everyone's raving about, so you're going to look like an asshole if you can't banter about how cool the talking polar bear is.

Hmm, this looks like a hodgepodge of all the current and past epics put together in a gimmick. Talking animals, faux futuristic cities, zepplins, adventure, magic, futuristic dimensions. And throw in a bunch of big name actors! This looks like crap.

Its actually based on a pretty good book series. I haven't read all of them(Only The Golden Compass, and The Subtle Knife). I recommend reading them because they are pretty interesting.

Nicole Kidman is the AntiChrist.

I don't know about you, but there are a couple of things that this trailer does HORRIBLY wrong which sell the movie short if it is any good:
1) Open by linking it with another movie franchise... as soon as you do the 'in the tradition of' or similar type thing you are devaluing the movie you are trying to advertise. In effect you're saying "Here's a second runner to those other films you liked"
2) Using music from other, well known films... Gladiator and, I can't remember the other one, but I recognise it as being used before, it might have been something like Holst's 'The Planets' actually.

I like the look of it, but I would be pretty pissed off with the trailer if it were my film, let it stand on its own dammit!

I'd do the Anti Christ.

yeah, trying to ride on the fame of another movie that has no relation to this one (other than the genre) is pretty ghey.

Mouse, you obviously haven't read the books. Do your homework then come back and comment when you're in a position to.

Wow.......

That trailer did a horrible job at trying to explain any assence of a plot........
I still have no idea what this movie's about.........

The Lord of the Rings reference in the beginning just ruined any sense of originality................

The books are an allegory about the struggle between received opinion and organized religion on one hand, with scientific skepticism and ethical atheism on the other (which apparently will be downplayed in this movie series.)

It's about 2 orders of magnitude better than Harry Potter, and much more entertaining and intellectually rigorous than any fantasies that Tolkien or C.S. Lewis wrote.

how in the world could these books possibly be translated into a movie? i mean of course they can, and will be, but the books are so intricate and... not centering around goofy action sequences. oh i dont know this just makes me sad.

I think I'm the only person that never liked The Golden Compass as a book. As a movie, it doesn't look any better (or less boring).
