Meryl Streep in Mamma Mia!
To the delight of fans of musical theatre and ABBA, which I assume share largely the same audience, the stage musical Mamma Mia! will soon be headed to the screen with Meryl Streep in the role of the mamma (mia). The musical combines the story of a Greek wedding, the '70s pop music of ABBA, and general poor taste in entertainment into something that has everyone asking: "Why would I ever intentionally hear Dancing Queen outside of a wedding?" Yet, somehow, Streep will win an Oscar for this.

Mamma Mia suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks. The entire "book" for the musical could fit on one page. It has to be the weakest story for a musical ever (next to Cats). Just because something is popular doesn't make it good (see: Pirates of the Caribbean 2). Hopefully Meryl will elevate it somewhat but it has the potential to be a big dud.

This can't be true. It really is a badly written musical, and if you didn't know the songs you would likely walk out halfway thru, but because you know the songs, you stay to the end and participate karaoke-style as they provide the 3-song mini-concert at the end (trying to eek extra minutes to make the experience complete).
One reason Meryl has stayed on top is avoiding shitty roles and shittier movies.
Or is she losing her mind?
