Jan 13 2006Grendel Is A Tall, Bearded Gentleman

The trailer for Beowulf & Grendel, the upcoming movie based on the epic tale of Beowulf, has been released on the official site. I read this story in high school, but I remember Grendel being a much cooler opponent. Isn't he some kind of monster? If the trailer is any indication, Beowulf is basically fighting a wrestler, or a tall, cartoon hermit. Hopefully he'll fight a dinosaur or something too.
Which reminds me: remember that part in King Kong where he tears that dinosaur's jaw open? That was really something.

That's actually not Grendel pictured; it's his father. He gets killed in the beginning of the story, essentially putting the plot in motion.

Actually, Grendel's father was Cain, or he was somehow born of Cain's murder of Abel or some such shit. Anywho, Grendel's father isn't a monster. The plot isn't put in motion by Grendel's father getting murdered at all. Grendel is killing all the townspeople and soldiers in a village and Beowulf comes to slay him. Oh, that's right. I took senior English in high school. If that is Grendel, it's a letdown from the illustrations in John Gardner's novel about Grendel. He looked more like a Wookie/catman and not so much like a grizzled wrestler with too much chest hair.

Oh! And I just remembered that Grendel's mother was killed, not his father. So yeah.
